Antique cameo brooch of Medusa
Antique cameo brooch/pendant in a 14-carat gold frame featuring the mythological image of Medusa.
Medusa was exceptionally beautiful. She lived in a land where the sun never shone. Medusa begged Athena to let her leave for sunnier climes. When Athena refused, she humiliated the goddess. In another version of the myth, Medusa is said to have aroused Athena's wrath by making love to Poseidon in Athena's temple. Athena took revenge by turning Medusa's hair into a nest of writhing serpents. Furthermore, anyone who looked Medusa in the face would be petrified on the spot. Ultimately, she was killed and beheaded by Perseus, assisted by Athena. From her blood (as a result of a previous love affair with Poseidon) were born the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor. Finally, Perseus gave her head to Athena, who placed it on her shield to petrify enemies.
